Wooden trunk - practical storage and seat in one

There are furniture that you buy "on occasion" and then it is difficult to imagine your home without them. Wooden trunk is just such a piece of furniture. It hides things that take up a lot of space and that we don't need every day, and at the same time gives us extra space to sit. Below we tell you where the trunk works best and what to pay attention to when choosing.

What is a wooden trunk useful for?

The trunk is simply a large box with an opening lid. This simple design has several advantages that neither a chest of drawers nor a wardrobe can offer:

• holds large and soft items, for example quilts, pillows, blankets and rugs that would not fit in a dresser drawer,
• is short, so it does not cover the window or overwhelm the interior,
• serves as a seat, where you can sit comfortably to put on your shoes or put your bag down,
• organizes the space in one move: you lift the lid, put your stuff in, close it and everything disappears from view.

Where to put the trunk at home?

In the bedroom, at the foot of the bed. This is the most popular place. The trunk can accommodate spare bedding, a seasonal duvet and a bedspread, and in the evening you can put your clothes for the next day on it. It looks best when it is slightly narrower than the bed. Our trunk has it 90 cm wide, so it fits well into a double bed 140, 160 or 180 cm.

In the hall. Here, the trunk replaces a bench with a shoe cabinet. You sit down to change and hide hats, scarves, gloves or shopping bags inside. This is a good solution in a hall where there is no space for a wardrobe.

In the child's room. Toy trunk it's a classic: the child himself throws the blocks and stuffed animals into it, and the room is back in order in a few minutes. You can place the trunk under the window and put a pillow on it, creating a reading corner.

In the living room. The trunk can be used as a bench next to the sofa or as a storage space for blankets and board games.

What size trunk should I choose?

Before purchasing, measure the space and check whether the trunk will not block the passage. Our trunk Scandi has dimensions 90 × 44 × 52 cm (width × depth × height). It's similar in height to a chair, so it's comfortable to sit on, and it's deep 44 cm allows you to fit a folded duvet.

Leave some space in front of the case to lift the lid. If you place it under a windowsill, check that the open cover will not hit the windowsill.

Oak, pine or color?

It is best to match the chest to the furniture that is next to it:

• natural oak and bleached oak match oak beds and chests of drawers, giving a calm, noble effect,
• natural oak with black adds a modern contrast to the interior,
• white, ashen and white with oak will work well in bright bedrooms and children's rooms,
• colorless pine and natural pine these are more affordable versions, still made of solid wood.

What should you pay attention to in the design of the trunk?

• Solid wood. The trunk often serves as a seat, so it must be stiff and stable. Solid wood holds up well to this over the years.
• Fittings with soft closing. We use fittings in our trunks Blum with a gentle and silent closing system, so the lid does not slam.
• Finish. Semi-matt acrylic varnish protects the wood against dirt and facilitates daily cleaning.
• No visible screws. The trunk looks like one coherent piece of furniture, not like a bolted box.

If the trunk is in a small child's room, show them how to open and close the lid safely, and don't let them get into it.

What to keep in your trunk?

1. In the bedroom: spare bedding, duvet for the change of season, pillows for guests, bedspreads.
2. In the hall: hats, scarves, gloves, umbrellas, shopping bags.
3. In the child's room: toys, blocks, costumes, soft mascots.
4. In the living room: blankets, rugs, board games, albums.
